Saint Demetrius (Agios Dimitrios) is one of the most important martyr saints of the Orthodox Church: As the patron saint of Thessaloniki and patron of soldiers, he represents courage in faith, steadfastness, and loyalty to Christ even in times of persecution. The depiction shows the saint in his classical Byzantine iconography as a warrior and martyr in military attire.

The icon is made on dark wood and features a characteristic wavy edge as well as decorative brass nails at the corners. These distinctive features come from a small Greek family workshop that follows the Byzantine tradition and has developed its own artisanal signature with attention to detail.
