The Archangel Michael (Archistrategos) – the "Supreme Commander" of the heavenly hosts – is one of the most revered angels in the Orthodox Church: The icon depicts him in all his majesty, with outstretched wings, in the robes of a heavenly commander, his gaze serious and watchful, directed at the viewer. As Archistrategos, he is considered a powerful protector and intercessor for the faithful and is particularly invoked for aid, protection, and strength.
The icon is made on dark wood and features a characteristic wavy edge as well as decorative brass nails at the corners. These distinctive features come from a small Greek family workshop that follows Byzantine tradition and has developed its own artisanal signature with attention to detail.
